This becomes less of a problem as the series progresses, with plenty of new music being introduced to support the story as it reaches the finale. The background music which play during the episodes usually fit very well with the situation, although some tracks seem to be overused a little at first. The majority of the openings/endings are a pleasure to watch due to fantastic animated sequences and theme songs. The voice acting is of an excellent and consistent quality, and I think that pretty much all the characters have voice actors which suit their personalities. The various battles are consistently exciting to watch, but somehow get even better towards the end of the series. The action scenes are brilliant and VERY well animated, with a variety of alchemy techniques and other talents being displayed nearly every episode. The facial emotions of the characters are also perfectly presented. Compared to the original FMA it's a bit simpler but that's just because the original set a very high standard to follow. The animation in FMA Brotherhood is crisp and very well done (although it does sometimes dip a bit in quality). By the final episode, all loose ends are neatly tied up and what's left is a hugely satisfying epilogue. The plot is full of clever ideas and unpredictable twists that link various parts of the story together. However, after trying to look at it from the perspective of someone who's new to FMA (not comparing it to the manga nor the original), I believe that the pacing works and it manages to tell an intriguing story effectively with little confusion. Events that took up half a volume of the manga and had spread though a few episodes of the original anime were now shown in just a single episode. I admit that as I've seen the original and read the manga, the pacing of Brotherhood seems to start off being VERY fast (I finally got used to the pacing after That myth should be dispelled, as there's only one word to describe this series - EPIC. Brotherhood is meant to be a remake of the original, this time sticking to the manga all the way through, but there were people who thought it would spoil the franchise. After years of training, the Elric brothers set off on a quest to restore their bodies by locating the Philosopher's Stone-a powerful gem that allows an alchemist to defy the traditional laws of Equivalent Exchange.Īs Edward becomes an infamous alchemist and gains the nickname "Fullmetal," the boys' journey embroils them in a growing conspiracy that threatens the fate of the world.įirst of all, I have seen the original FMA and although it was very popular and original, the pacing and conclusion did not sit too well with me. Known as a bio-mechanical engineering prodigy, Winry creates prosthetic limbs for Edward by utilizing "automail," a tough, versatile metal used in robots and combat armor. The brothers are rescued by their neighbor Pinako Rockbell and her granddaughter Winry. Instead, they suffered brutal personal loss: Alphonse's body disintegrated while Edward lost a leg and then sacrificed an arm to keep Alphonse's soul in the physical realm by binding it to a hulking suit of armor. Ignoring the alchemical principle banning human transmutation, the boys attempted to bring their recently deceased mother back to life. After a horrific alchemy experiment goes wrong in the Elric household, brothers Edward and Alphonse are left in a catastrophic new reality.

I could continue describing it but the appeal of the show is its weirdness and its effect can only really be experienced by watching it. One example: “Okay, not that I care, but here’s Sifl and Olly.” Sifl and Olly did most of the pitching for Roy’s products, and then they cut it over to him to remind you to buy his stuff. The stars of the recurring supporting cast were Chester (lovable stoner friend of Sifl and Olly) and Precious Roy, a TV pitchman for products like pirate cripplers (“to render any pirate helpless,” of course). Here’s one representative exchange between Sifl and Olly and a caller:ĬALLER: “Uhh, yeah, I’m having a little bit of a problem in the bathroom.”ĬALLER: “Don’t make me say it, it’s so embarrassing… shaving.” Here’s an interview segment from one episode: Olly says it’s time for interviews, and he says, “Sifl, I have no idea what you booked.” Sifl says, hesitatingly, “I got some… characters that are going to do nursery rhymes.” Olly asks if it will be Mother Goose nursery rhymes, and Sifl says, “No, these guys were blacklisted by Mother Goose.” And then it’s what you’d think: a parade of bizarre characters (also all socks) reading weird, bad poems in different voices. The structure was a series of segments: interviews, music videos, poetry, jokes. The show was created by musicians Liam Lynch (who later directed the Tenacious D movie) and Matt Crocco, and they voiced almost all of the characters. (I hope that drawing attention to them doesn’t lead to a cease-and-desist from MTV, which would be very un-chill.) The athropos videos are the ones you want-at some point, video game content company Machinima (I assume after buying the rights) started producing Sifl and Olly video game review videos, and those videos have a different (newer) look and are bad and not cool. Thank you, athropos! And another user, Vegetarianrage, also uploaded a bunch of episodes. There is no DVD set of the show, which is offensive and sad, but some enterprising and godly YouTube user, athropos, has uploaded 41 of them (I believe that may be the full set). I watch YouTube clips of it more than is healthy. It’s that kind of humor-deceptively simple, usually eliciting giggles more than guffaws, but extremely likeable. And about one year ago, I rediscovered it in YouTube clips and, man, it has aged well.Įach 20-minute-episode opens with the very catchy theme song: “Sifl / and / Ol-ly / Sifl / and Olly / show!” (Now repeat 4x.) Midway through the song, they yell “rock!” and show a rock on the screen.Īnother recurring song, equally delightful, is when they take calls from the public the song goes: “Calls calls calls / calls from the public / calls calls calls, calls” and then a phone hits the operator in the head with a satisfying coconut thwack. I was 10 years old in 1997 and we didn’t have “cable” anyway (just the basic channels: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, UPN, WB), so it’s hazy to me how or why I even remember the show, but I recall being a big fan. Yes, a sock puppet show, but what a sock puppet show it was! As charming as it was low-budget. If you have no idea what Sifl and Olly was, the briefest and most succinct description would be: a sock-puppet show. I guess it was originally a TV thing, but now it’s definitely an internet thing. Mine has to be The Sifl and Olly Show, which was on MTV from 1997 to 1999-the days when MTV was “music television” and was funky and, often, weird (in the best sense). content aggregator/curator, before those were dirty words), this week asked people for their favorite under-the-radar internet things. Given all of the reports at the time of travelling about the endless queues at UK airports, we were more than happy with the time it took us. There is a hopper bus that you can take for cheaper, but we decided to go for the easier option of an Uber.Īfter being dropped at London Heathrow’s Terminal 3, we got through bag drop within around 15 minutes, which I think was aided by uploading our Covid and travel documents through the VeriFly app the night before as recommended by British Airways, and proceeded through the security within around 30 minutes. At around 12:30 we booked an Uber to Terminal 3 departures, which was £11.70. After a good breakfast (£16 for full English hot food and £13 for cold continental) we packed up the room, checked out, and relaxed in the lobby for half an hour. We had a good late check-out of midday at The Renaissance, and given that we weren’t flying until 16:40, we made the most out of it. Liv joined me later for some food, which was fairly expensive but well-portioned, before we headed back up to get some sleep before the flight the following day. We checked into a decent-sized and comfortable room at The Renaissance, helped by very friendly staff, and whilst Liv had a nap I headed down to the bar and grabbed a couple of pints whilst watching the football. We received the results by email around 40 minutes later with our Fit to Fly certificate showing we thankfully both tested negative. Once we arrived they scanned the QR code, checked our passport details, and then swabbed both our noses – we were all done within 5 minutes. When we booked online we were able to book a timeslot and received a QR code. We were fairly nervous about the process but it turned out to be super easy. It wasn’t the easiest process to find out on the Government website which test we needed, but there was a useful questionnaire on the ExpressTest website that outlined which tests you need for which country. As we would already be in London the day before, we decided to book an ExpressTest antigen test at a drive-through facility at Heathrow Terminal 4. In order to get into the US on the following day, we were still required at the time to take a supervised PCR or antigen Covid test no more than one day prior to flying. After lunch and a quick walk down the canal and back, we drove the final hour of the journey to London Heathrow. The description in the book is pretty close to how I imagined the pub, which in real life serves a good range of beers and food. The pub is featured in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials prequel ‘La Belle Sauvage’ as the inn which Malcolm Polstead’s parents own. On the way down to London Heathrow we stopped off in Oxford, around 3 hours drive from home, to meet my cousin and his partner at The Trout Inn, Wolvercote, a beautiful pub and restaurant located on the banks of the River Thames. We used Holiday Extras to find the best deals but ended up booking direct with The Renaissance for the same price. This came to a fairly reasonable £239 which wasn’t so bad and the cost was fairly comparable to hotel stays plus hotel parking. After some to-ing and fro-ing, we decided to head down a day earlier and booked a stay at the Renaissance London Heathrow where we could also leave our car for the 16 nights we would be away. On our original honeymoon booking, which we had to postpone when we postponed our wedding in June 2021, we were due to fly from Manchester, however for 2022 the flights just didn’t work out the same. On Saturday 4 June we packed up the car at our house in North Manchester to make the drive down to London Heathrow. No listicles, no guides, this is just a run down of our experiences along the way. One week after myself and Liv finally tied the knot at Gibson Mill in Hebden Bridge, we jetted off on our honeymoon to Las Vegas and Mexico via a night at a London Heathrow Hotel. These are a great way to galvanising you into action by doing things you’d not necessarily bother with otherwise. You can earn up to 250 daily quest points by performing yet more specific tasks and unlocking yet more collectibles. Castaway Paradise certainly makes you work for it. You’ll have to return again and again if you want to get that elusive platinum trophy. The trophies for growing all fruits, crop and flowers are also hamstrung but more due to the last fruit being gated to level 25 and the final flower only being available at level 34. It all smacks of artificially prolonging the game’s life a little. The first two sets are straightforward enough to fulfil, but the seashells are only refreshed every twenty four hours and it’s pot luck as to whether you get any new examples. There are seven barriers to unlock with puzzle pieces you’ll initially unlock by finishing quests, eventually you’ll get rich enough that you can bypass the work by buying the tokens in the shop. The requirement for catching a particular fish being particularly annoying as it’s often difficult to distinguish between different fish sizes. These tasks range from the mundane to overly demanding. The areas with extra buildings, including the museum, are gated at the outset and you’ll have to earn money by performing fetch quests or providing specific items for the other islanders. When you are initially washed up on the island, after a short tutorial you’re thrown into the thick of it. There are trophies for collecting all of these, as well as every flower, every crop and every fruit. You can also grow a large variety of flowers as well as many different fruit trees and you can also collect shells that wash up on the seashore. Castaway Paradise harks back to the halcyon days of the Gamecube and DS iterations in terms of the sheer addictive hook of just one more task before you call it for the night.
